It’s no secret that the beauty industry is growing, so why is now the best time to start? There’s more to the industry than the jobs you’re familiar with. With growth comes the creation of new and unique jobs, so if you’re passionate about beauty, it might be time to make that passion a reality!

What’s Available Right Now?

What comes to mind when you think of the beauty industry? Surely you have someone that does your hair regularly, but you or someone you know probably has someone they see for their skin or nails. Popular careers within the industry include hairstylist, barber, aesthetician, and nail tech.

Cosmetology Jobs

If you’re interested in hair or makeup, why should you start now? The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that within the next decade, employment for hairstylists, barbers, and cosmetologists will grow by 8%. This is faster than the average growth for all occupations.

There is one simple explanation for this, and it’s population growth. As the population grows, so does the need for stylists. Find out what it takes to become a licensed cosmetologist to see if this might be the perfect career for you.

Aesthetician Jobs

When it comes to skincare, the job growth is even greater than cosmetology. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this industry is estimated to grow by 11% within the next decade. Perhaps it’s the sudden rise in “self care,” or how easy it is for people to share their routines via social media, but skincare has never been more popular.

For example, Reddit’s “Skincare Addiction” sub has over one million subscribers. This surge in organic, user-generated content has given the population access to real and new information about virtually every skincare treatment available. It’s no surprise that this directly contributed to the growth in aesthetics, and the need for people to fill these jobs has never been greater.

Newer treatments like microdermabrasion, LED light therapy, and microcurrent services are growing in popularity and require more people to perform them. If skincare seems perfect for you, find out more about how to become a licensed aesthetician.

What’s New?

As the beauty industry grows, so do new job opportunities! There are numerous unique roles being created every day. Technology and social media have allowed people to share their passion for beauty in real time to a huge audience.

In turn, this social exposure increases the popularity for certain treatments, allowing people to become experts in those specific fields. While these are just a few examples of recent jobs, new ones are surfacing all the time.

Beauty Influencer

Beauty Influencers utilize a number of platforms such as Instagram. Instagram allows influencers to reach high engagement levels with their followers. This engagement allows beauty influencers to gain more followers, and in turn, brand sponsorships.

In the last few years, brand budgets for influencers has exploded. The Instagram influencer market is estimated to reach $1.7 billion by the end of 2019. According to a study by Linqia, 39% of brands plan to increase their influencer marketing budget next year. By combining your passion for beauty with social media, beauty influencing might be a career you should pursue.

Lash Artist

Lash treatments and extensions are on the rise, and between 2019 to 2024 the industry is expected to reach $1.5 billion in product sales. Lash treatments include lash dying and perms, while extensions have a number of varieties. Lash extensions are semi-permanent synthetic or mink lashes that are glued to an individual eyelash.

Classic sets start at one additional lash per natural lash, while volume sets can add up to ten lashes per natural lash. As these treatments are relatively new in North America, lash artists are in high demand.

According to a study by ABC News, 75% of lash artists in the United States can earn up to $50,000 per year. A foundation in either aesthetics or cosmetology allows you to be flexible and offer services in addition to lash extensions.
